EARTHBRAIN Launches “Smart Construction Pointworks” – A Simple and Intuitive Tool for Editing Point Cloud Data, Enhancing Integration with Smart Construction® Solutions

EARTHBRAIN Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Akinori Onodera, hereinafter “EARTHBRAIN”) has officially launched “Smart Construction Pointworks” (hereinafter “the application”), a web-based application that enables easy editing of point cloud data directly from a browser, starting today.

When site topography is captured using drones or laser scanners and converted into point cloud data, viewing and editing the data has traditionally required expensive software installed on high-performance computers. However, this new application enables users to easily edit point cloud data directly in a web browser, without the need for local installation—making it possible to work from virtually anywhere.

With Smart Construction Pointworks, users can remove unnecessary objects, fill in missing areas, and check cross-sectional shapes with simple operations. For example, if point cloud data includes unnecessary objects such as construction equipment during the planning phase, these can be selectively deleted. If unintended holes are found in the data, they can be filled. In cases where point cloud data is too dense and large in file size, the data can be thinned to reduce volume.

The app also allows users to measure distances between points, evaluate flatness, and analyze cross-sectional profiles of any location. The results can be exported as DXF format design data, allowing for smooth integration with other CAD software.

Point cloud data edited using this application can be seamlessly integrated with a wide range of Smart Construction® solutions provided by EARTHBRAIN—streamlining the entire workflow from data acquisition to management and utilization.

For example:

  • Point cloud data generated from drone images via Smart Construction Edge (a high-speed 3D terrain data processing tool),
  • Or data captured with Smart Construction Quick3D, a smartphone/tablet-based LiDAR scanning solution,

...can be edited directly in Smart Construction Pointworks.

The edited data can then be visualized and used within Smart Construction Dashboard, a 3D viewer-based platform for monitoring site conditions.

By making point cloud editing more accessible, this solution expands the ways in which point cloud data can be used throughout the construction process, promoting greater adoption of ICT and improving operational efficiency on-site.

EARTHBRAIN remains committed to advancing the digital transformation of construction sites, enhancing productivity, safety, and environmental performance, and helping to realize smarter, cleaner job sites for the future.

[Appendix] Overview of “Smart Construction Pointworks”

1. Key Features

(1) Delete Unnecessary Point Cloud Data

When point cloud data includes irrelevant objects—such as construction machinery not needed for planning or management—users can easily remove specific sections as needed.

(2) Fill Gaps in Point Cloud Data

When unexpected holes are found in the generated point cloud, or when gaps are created as a result of removing unnecessary data, the application allows users to fill those voids seamlessly.

(3) Reduce Point Density for Large or High-Density Data

When point clouds generated by laser scanners or other sources are too dense or result in excessively large file sizes, the application allows users to thin out the data to reduce its volume and make it more manageable.

(4) Perform Point Cloud Measurements

The application enables measurement of point-to-point distances and surface flatness within the point cloud data.

(5) Cross-Sectional Profile Check

During as-built or quantity surveys, users can display and review cross-sectional profiles at any desired location. The reviewed data can be exported in DXF format, allowing for easy integration with other CAD software.
